Cult Sequels: A Plague
¬2
Written By MCA/Vicious
¬1
Sequels are much too common these
days. The List seems to go on forever
and most of the time they don't come
near the first movie. We've got
Friday the 13th with 9 parts to date,
the last of which being 'Jason Goes To
Hell'. We've got Nightmare on
Elmstreet with 6 parts and the series
has been concluded (luckily). The
Omen, The Howling, House, Scanners,
Halloween, all of them have sequels.
Especially the final parts are a pain
in the ass. This section covers the
originators of each sequelled film.
In this first article: The Friday the
13th series and The Nightmare on
Elmstreet series.
¬3 Friday The 13th
¬2 ---------------
¬1The trendsetter for all slash 'em up
flicks.
¬3 Jason's History
¬2 ---------------
¬1On a sunny day at camp Crystal Lake.
Christy Voorhees and her son Jason are
having a little summer break with Ms.
Voorhees functioning as the Camp-cook.
The kiddies are playing and the
counselors are busy with their own
personal problems. Little boy Jason
decides to go for a swim in the lake.
In the middle of the lake, he finds
out that he's quite tired. Screaming
for help, the boy tries to keep his
head above the water. The camp
counselors can't hear his cries and
Jason takes his final breath and
drowns (quite a breath if he manages
to stay alive for 8 films to come).
¬3 The Movie
¬2 ---------
¬1It's summertime again and counselor
training is starting. Their
destination is camp Crystal Lake.
Problem is that a quarter of the
expected counselors don't survive the
way there. Each one of them gets
slaughtered but one of them remains.
She meets up with Christy Voorhees who
treats her real nicely at first, but
then she blames the girl for her son's
death. After a long chase, the
remaining counselor beheads Ms.
Voorhees and faints. She wakes up the
next morning drifting in the lake in a
small canoo. Then, up jumps Jason and
takes her under. A few hours later
she wakes up on a stretcher when she
inquires about the boy who pulled her
under. The local authorities said
that they didn't find anyone...
¬2 --------
¬1As it is, this is quite a decent film
with some cool atmosphere. The
special effects are also of a high
standard. The reason for this is that
Goremaster Tom Savini created them
(who also did most of the effects for
all George A. Romero flicks eg.
Dawn/Day of the Dead). Sean S.
Cunningham did a tremendous job at
creating just the right 'creepy' mood.
An okay soundtrack plays during the
film but tends to be disturbing at
some points. But that's no reason to
skip this one. Good entertainment
which will be long remembered...
¬3 The Sequels
¬2 -----------
¬1Eight in total, the ninth part is
still to be released.
¬3 Friday the 13th Part II
¬2 -----------------------
¬1Jason finds the girl who decaptitated
his mother and kills her, then goes
off for more slashing at Crystal Lake.
A little disappointing this one. Much
of the feeling of the first one is
lost.
¬3 Friday the 13th Part III
¬2 ------------------------
¬1 No prelude, just another series of
killings at the infamous camp. This
one has a good amount of shock effects
but the amount of blood has been toned
down a great deal. The cinema-version
was in 3d, the video was never
released as a 3d video. This one's
okay...next!
¬3 Friday the 13th Part IV:
The Final Chapter
¬2--------------------------------------
¬1Nice concluder for the first series.
Jason escapes from the morgue
department of the local hospital and
decides to spill some more blood. Tom
Savini did a fucking great job again,
especially with the finale. A first
time role for Corey Feldman as the
little kid who acts like he is Jason's
brother at the end. See this one for
the record.
¬3 Friday the 13th Part V:
A New Beginning
¬2--------------------------------------
¬1Dumb storyline and below average
acting makes this one a rotten egg.
No real Jason here, just someone who
imitates his methods at a mental
resort. Avoid...
¬3 Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
¬2 ------------------------------------
¬1Tommy Jarvis (the little boy in part 4
and one of the mental patients in 5)
digs up Jason's body to determine
wether he is alive or dead. And
whadyaknow? As Tommy stabs the dead
Jason with an iron bar, he leaves the
bar in his body and lightning strikes,
awakening Jason who continues stalking
in Camp Forest Green (renamed after
the numerous murders). This is my
favorite of the bunch, not a lot of
blood but this one doesn't have a
single dull moment. See it, ok?
¬3 Friday the 13th Part VII:
The New Blood
¬2--------------------------------------
¬1This one's something of a dictionary
called 'A thousand ways to kill
someone'. Party hats, horns, smashing
a tent (with someone in it ofcoz)
against a tree, you name it, it's
there. Shame about the small amount
of blood though. A weak plot also
doesn't help but it's nice to see it
once.
¬3 Friday the 13th Part VIII:
Jason Takes Manhatten
¬2--------------------------------------
¬4WHERE'S THE BLOOD????¬1 Jason hops on a
cruise ship, murders almost everyone
and then follows the remaining few to
the shore of New York. The action is
teriffic, but the horror's gone. Only
if you're a truly dedicated fan or an
action addict...
¬3 A Nightmare On Elmstreet
¬2 ------------------------
¬1Six parts in total, and they stopped
filming way after the theme wore down.
¬3 Freddy's History
¬2 ----------------
¬1A notorious child murderer called Fred
Krueger is arrested by the police,
Much to the relief of every parent.
But (!!!!) someone filled in the
arrest form in the wrong place and
Freddy was a free man again. The
parents became furious and tracked him
down to an old abandoned boiler room
where he used to take his victims.
They poured gasoline all over the
place and lit it up. Freddy burned
and died. Then he became a menace to
adolescents aswell as adults.
¬3 The Film
¬2 --------
¬1A group of four kids are having
nightmares about the same guy. He
wears a dirty red-green sweater, a
hat, he is burnt and uses knives for
fingers welded on a glove. One of
them, Tina, asks the other ones except
her boyfriend Rod Lane to sleep over.
Tina and Rod are having some fights.
That night, Rod comes over to make up
with her and they fuck. Nancy and her
boyfriend are sleeping in seperate
rooms, when they hear a lot of
screaming. Tina is being killed in
her sleep by Freddy, although the
others don't know this. After she
dies, Rod jumps out the window and
becomes the number one suspect. After
his arrest, he gets killed. Nancy
knows that Freddy did it and begins
taking security measures. By popping
pills and drinking coffee, she stays
awake for seven days. Then her
boyfriend gets killed and Nancy brings
Freddy from her dream to reality where
she kills him. For a while at
least...
¬3 Commemts
¬2 --------
¬1This was Wes Craven's first
breakthrough and what kind of
breakthrough!! This is one of the
better popular horror's I've ever
seen. The acting is okay and the
music by Charles Bernstein is
hauntingly excellent. Robert Englund
excells as Freddy, being much more
scary than in the parts 3, 4, 5 and 6.
This is actually a very scary and
atmospheric movie that shouldn't be
missed by anybody.
¬3 The Sequels
¬2 -----------
¬1Each one gets worse successively. A
shame to wear a story like this down
to the depths of darkness.
¬3 A Nightmare on Elmstreet II:
Freddy's Revenge
¬2--------------------------------------
¬1A moody and exceptional sequel. It
becomes obvious though, that this one
was ment to be a commercial movie but
as a cult film, this one stands tall.
Great soundtrack by Christopher Young
and some good acting make this a cool
production.
¬3 A Nightmare On Elmstreet III:
The Dream Warriors
¬2--------------------------------------
¬1This is where it all begins. Freddy
starts making unnecessary jokes which
gradually takes away the horrorish
flavour. But still I've seen this one
the most of them all and it doesn't
bore you for one single second. Nancy
Thompson returns in this one too.
¬3 A Nightmare On Elmstreet IV:
The Dream Master
¬2--------------------------------------
¬4BLEEEEEAAAAAUUUUURRRRGGHHH!¬1 Blah,
euhg. This is not supposed to be a
comedy movie, but it definately
belongs there. What a waste...
Freddy, the stand up comedian.
¬3 A Nightmare On Elmstreet V:
The Dream Child
¬2--------------------------------------
¬1Disastrous attempt to recreate the
mood of the first two flicks, leaving
nothing of the original script. This
could do as a comedy flick.
¬3 Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare
¬2 ----------------------------------
¬1This film was so bad, it needed 3d
vision to make something of it. The
video release doesn't even have 3d
(except if you buy it but that would
be a waste of money). A disappointing
finale in an already torn down story.
It ended with this one, and not a
moment too soon...
Next time round, I'll review the
Halloween cycle and the Night of the
Living Dead cycle with it's numerous,
but gory rip offs.
